When the Ministry destroys culture, turn the scandals into content

Slovakia's Minister of Culture, a former TV presenter fired for racist posts, has been systematically dismantling the institution she was appointed to protect. Independent funds politicized, national directors dismissed, LGBTQ+ projects defunded. 18,000 marched. 400,000 signed petitions. Four parliamentary votes failed. She is still in charge (April 2026). 

Open Culture Platform, a non-profit fighting to preserve independent Slovak culture, needed recurring donors to sustain its work. The problem wasn't awareness of the crisis, it was conversion. Outrage had peaked, and the cultural bubble wasn't expanding. A standard fundraising campaign would land in the same exhausted space as every protest before it. So our agency started from a different question: what's the one cultural product Slovaks actually pay for every month? A streaming subscription. The infrastructure for paying for culture already existed. It just needed to be redirected.

A Donatello bust mysteriously disappearing from a Slovak museum became an action thriller. A minister's €16,000 New York flight during budget cuts became a documentary. A self-serving amateur painting exhibited at Bratislava Castle became an animated family film. A Vatican road trip in a ministerial Mercedes became a Fast & Furious-style action film.

The platform didn't ask people to be angry. It gave them something to watch, share, and talk about.

Each title listed the real events as the plot and the real officials as the cast. The platform had its own navigation: "You don't want to see this," "Currently unpopular," "Top 10 shows against culture in Slovakia" designed to mirror the UX logic of real streaming services while making the satire impossible to miss.

Every new scandal would become a new title. The archive keeps growing.

Launched like Netflix, not like an NGO

The campaign launched the way a real streaming service would, not the way a non-profit fundraiser would.

A "save the date" teaser campaign created the impression of a major streaming player entering Slovakia. It was followed by a celebrity press conference featuring acclaimed Slovak actors Táňa Pauhofová and Ľuboš Kostelný, alongside crowdfunding partner Donio. The platform was listed on ČSFD and IMDb. Trailers ran in actual cinemas before feature films.

100+ media placements followed. A social content blitz. The campaign occupied the full cultural surface area of a real streaming launch, because that was the point.

AI that defends artists

The production choice carried its own editorial weight.

All trailer visuals were generated using AI tools, the only way to produce 14 cinematic-quality trailers on a non-profit budget. But the scripts were written by experienced creatives, and every trailer was dubbed by actors from the Slovak National Theatre.

The result was a deliberate paradox: AI being used to defend the artists it's often accused of threatening. That tension didn't go unnoticed. It became a talking point in its own right, generating a second layer of media debate beyond the political content of the campaign.

The campaign reached more people than live in Slovakia. The earned media value was 48× the paid media spend. The donation spike of 396% was not the result of a bigger budget, it was the result of a better idea.

What a €2,500 media budget actually proved

The numbers are striking. But what they prove goes beyond performance.

Culture+ demonstrated that civic communication doesn't have to speak in the register of protest. It can borrow the language of entertainment, not to trivialize a serious situation, but to make it impossible to ignore. The platform didn't ask people to be angry. It gave them something to watch, share, and talk about. The donation mechanic arrived at the end of an experience, not at the top of a banner ad.

It also created something no protest march or petition had managed to produce: a permanent, growing archive of ministerial misconduct - documented, dramatized, and publicly accessible. Every new scandal strengthens it.

For a non-profit with no media budget to speak of, that is a durable asset, not just a campaign.
